With thousands of images, speeches, letters, newspapers, and interviews from the archives of South Dakota’s public universities and other partners, the Digital Library of South Dakota offers teachers and librarians primary sources that are free, in the public domain, and easily integrated with lessons and student projects. We will explore opportunities for using the DLSD to advance critical thinking, visual literacy and historical reasoning.

The Great Plains provided a rich environment for the first people in South Dakota. Primary resources from libraries, archaeologists, explorers and the United States Government document the life and history of American Indians before and after the westward expansion into the territory now known as South Dakota. The Plains people numbered many nomadic and semi-sedentary groups occupying and traversing land from Texas to Canada. This session highlights information readily available to educators for the teaching of South Dakota American Indian culture and history.

They provide opportunities for students to practice higher-order thinking skills required by today’s content standards. Primary source documents, history books, historical maps, genealogy resources, and encyclopedias—all these and more are available through the SD State Library statewide electronic resources. To help give insight into this part of our family history, let’s look at one of the most frustrating and fascinating documents a genealogist can find--a diary of an ancestor. We’ll explore why a diary is different from a book, or letters, or even oral history. Diaries can help us learn about the lives of those who came before us. They can give insight as to why your ancestors lived where they did and how they lived the lives they lived.

As an online, library-based information resource, the Black Hills Knowledge Network is building a virtual community archives for our region. Our online archives include primary documents and images. Shared on the site and via social media, these archives help communicate the history of our region. With a stronger sense of history comes a greater attachment to place. These resources provide Black Hills Knowledge Network users a foundation for dialogue on important public policy issues. In this session, participants will learn how to link history with current public policy issues to energize community engagement and strengthen decision-making.
